602-635-6176DNRs and living wills sound similar but serve very different purposes. Here's how to tell which document you actually need — and what makes each one valid in Arizona.
Case-by-Case
A DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) is something that's needed on a case-by-case basis. A DNR is a prehospital medical directive. In Arizona, it's required to be on orange paper, requires your photo to be on it, and requires your doctor to sign off — because what you're indicating to first responders is that you do not want to be resuscitated prior to going to the hospital.
What people often confuse this with is a living will, which contains your end-of-life instructions. A living will is when you're saying — if I'm approaching death either in a terminal condition or a vegetative state, I don't want to be kept alive on a breathing machine or feeding tube. They're different documents, and we want our clients to be educated on the difference between the two.
DNR vs Living Will
Tells first responders not to resuscitate you before you reach the hospital. Must be on orange paper, include your photo, and be signed by your doctor.
Documents your wishes if you're terminally ill or in a vegetative state — like whether you want to be kept on a breathing machine or feeding tube.
Arizona DNR Requirements
01
Arizona law requires the DNR be printed on orange paper so first responders can identify it immediately.
02
Your photograph must be on the document so responders can verify the directive belongs to you.
03
Your physician must sign off on the DNR for it to be honored by emergency responders.
